Carnatic Music loses doyenne Ponnammal

She was the first female student of the first batch of the Sree Swathi Thirunal Music Academy
She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017 for her contributions to Carnatic music.
She is also a recipient of M.G.Radhakrishnan Award (2016), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (2009)
In 2006, she scripted history when she became the first woman to perform at the famed Navarathri Mandapam breaking a centuries old tradition that forbade women from performing at the Navaratri celebrations of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
