A new version of the Akash Missile – ‘Akash Prime’ has been successfully flight tested from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur, Odisha
Advance features in comparison to the existing Akash System
- Akash Prime is equipped with an indigenous active Radio Frequency (RF) seeker for improved accuracy.
- More reliable performance under low temperature environments at higher altitudes.
Akash Missile System
- Akash is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited.
- Surveillance and Fire control radar, tactical control and command center and missile launcher are developed by Bharat Electronics (BEL), Tata Power Strategic Engineering Division and Larsen & Toubro.
- Range of the Akash Missile is up to 50–80 km and at altitudes of up to 18,000 m.
- These missiles can also neutralise aerial targets such as fighter jets, cruise missiles, air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles.
- It is in service with the Indian Army as well as the Indian Air Force.
