Indian boxers Simranjit Kaur and Ananta Chopade registered contrasting victories on the opening day to progress to the quarterfinals of Elorda Cup in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan yesterday. The 2018 World Championships bronze medallists Simranjit pulled off a comprehensive win against local boxer Ischanova Nazym by unanimous decision in the women's 60 kg bout. Ananta beat Mongolian pugilist Dorjnyambuu Ganbold in men's 54 kg category by 3-2. Simranjit will now square off against China's Xu Zichun and Ananta against Kazakhstan's Altynbek Nursultan in their quarter-finals matches.
A 33-member Indian contingent, including 12 men, is participating in the on-going event with two teams in the women’s section. Apart from India, the tournament also has boxers from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Cuba, China and Mongolia.
