Over 45 crore Jan Dhan Accounts have been opened in last seven years under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. The scheme was launched in 2014 with an aim to provide universal access to banking facilities to the people across the country. Jan Dhan has provided an avenue to the poor for bringing their savings into the formal financial system. The scheme has brought the unbanked into the banking system, expanded the financial architecture of India and brought financial inclusion to almost every adult.
The total deposit balances under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana accounts stand at over one lakh 68 thousand crore rupees as on 13th of this month. The average deposit per account is 3723 rupees. The Government has been making concerted efforts to promote financial inclusion as one of the important national objectives of the country. Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana has been the foundation stone for people-centric economic initiatives. During the pandemic, India witnessed the remarkable swiftness and seamlessness with which Direct Benefit Transfer has empowered and provided financial security to the vulnerable sections of society.
Under PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, an amount of five hundred rupees per month for three months April 2020 to June 2020, was credited to the accounts of women account holders under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. A total of 30 thousand 945 crore rupees have been credited in accounts of women Jan Dhan Accounts holders during COVID lockdown.
A mobile application, Jan Dhan Darshak App was launched to provide a citizen centric platform for locating banking touch points such as bank branches, ATMs, Bank Mitras and Post Offices in the country. This app is also being used for identifying villages which are not served by banking touch points within five kilometres. Thirty one crore 64 lakh RuPay cards have been issued to Jan Dhan Accounts holders till April this year.
