U.S. lawmakers approved $1 billion to resupply Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system after funding was controversially stripped from a separate Bill following a revolt from the Democrats’ left flank.
According to U.S. Lawmakers: Assistance to Israel is vital, because Israel’s security is an imperative for America's security
Iron Dome has destroyed thousands of shortrange rockets and shells launched by Hamas militants.
The system has been backed by the United States since it was launched a decade ago to the tune of $1.6 billion.
What is Iron Dome ?
Iron Dome (Kippat Barzel) is a mobile all-weather air defense system developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries
The system is designed to intercept and destroy short-range rockets and artillery shells fired from distances of 4 kms to 70 kms away and whose trajectory would take them to an Israeli populated area
Iron Dome was created to cope with mortars and rockets shot into Israel at relatively close range by militants in Gaza and by anti-Israel fighters in Lebanon belonging to Hezbollah
Iron Dome was originally developed without U.S. assistance
In 2014 the U.S. military contractor Raytheon Technologies began co-producing Iron Dome with Israel’s defence companies.
