The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) has been actively involved in providing services to the people affected by Covid-19.
International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies:
- The Red Cross is the name used in countries under nominally Christian sponsorship; Red Crescent (adopted on the insistence of the Ottoman Empire in 1906) is the name used in Muslim countries.
- The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is a global humanitarian organization, which coordinates and directs international assistance following natural and man-made disasters in non-conflict situations.
- It was founded in 1919 in Paris in the aftermath of World War I.
- It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
- It is the world’s largest humanitarian network which is guided by seven Fundamental Principles:
- Humanity
- Impartiality
- Neutrality
- Independence
- voluntary service
- Universality and unity
About Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS):
- IRCS is a voluntary humanitarian organization to protect human life and health with the help of its network of over 1100 branches throughout India.
- It was established in 1920 and has completed its 100 years of existence.
- It is a part of the largest independent humanitarian organization in the world, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
- Its mission is to provide relief at the time of disasters/emergencies and also promotes healthcare facilities among vulnerable people and communities.
- The President of India is the President and the Union Health Minister is the Chairman of the Society.
