Why in News?
In the Union Budget 2021, a universal water supply scheme for urban areas – Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) has been announced
Key Facts:
- Period of five years from 2021 to 2026.
- Under this, a provision of budget of 2,87,000 crore has been made.
- The objective of this scheme is to ensure supply of tap-water to 2.86 crore households in all 4,378 urban local bodies.
- It aims to manage liquid waste in 500 Amrit cities.
About Jal Jeevan Mission:
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ on 15 August 2019 on the occasion of Independence Day.
- The main objective of this scheme of the government is to provide water through pipes to all houses by 2024.
- Emphasis is also being laid on the creation of infrastructure for rainwater harvesting, ground water recharge and domestic wastewater management for reuse in agriculture under this mission.
